I GOT A NAME

Eddy McManus’ cover of Jim Croce’s “I Got a Name” is a beautiful tribute to the original 1973 single. This song is a true masterpiece, full of thought-provoking lyrics and emotive, expressive vocals. It’s clear that Eddy has a deep appreciation for the original song and its message, and he does an excellent job of bringing its themes to life in his own performance.

One of the things that makes “I Got a Name” such a memorable song is its message of pride and self-respect. As Eddy sings, “I’ve got a name, I’ve got a name / And I carry it with me like my daddy did / But I’m livin’ the dream that he kept hid,” it’s clear that he is expressing a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunities that he has been given, and a determination to make the most of them. At the same time, there is a sense of ambiguity in these lyrics, as they suggest both Croce’s gratitude for the chance to live his dream, and a challenge to himself to not be inhibited and lower expectations for himself as his father did.

There is also an interesting progression from name to song to dream in this song, which symbolizes identity, expression, and fulfillment. It seems to mark a life progression from childhood, to maturity, and completion with a soulmate.

Like nearly all of Croce’s work, “I Got a Name” is thought-provoking, artfully written, and prompts an emotional response. Eddy’s cover does an excellent job of capturing the spirit and meaning of the original song, and his powerful, expressive vocals make for a truly memorable performance. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and give this song a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
