BEYOND THE SEA

“Beyond the Sea,” a timeless classic of romantic pop music, was originally written in 1945 by Jack Lawrence and features music taken from the French song “La Mer” by Charles Trenet. Trenet’s original composition was an ode to the changing moods of the sea, while Lawrence transformed it into a love song with the simple addition of the word “Beyond” to the title.

Over the years, “Beyond the Sea” has been recorded by numerous artists, but it is Bobby Darin’s version, released in late 1959, that is perhaps the most well-known and beloved. Darin’s version reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 15 on the US R&B Chart, and No. 8 in the UK Singles Chart in early 1960, cementing its place as a timeless classic of pop music.

Before Darin’s version, two other recordings of “Beyond the Sea” reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Benny Goodman’s version, released in 1948, was featured in the Cary Grant/Betsy Drake romantic comedy Every Girl Should Be Married, while Roger Williams’ recording reached No. 37 in 1955.

Eddy McManus delivers a truly wonderful and stirring performance of “Beyond the Sea,” imbuing the song with a sense of passion and longing that is sure to captivate and move listeners of all ages. Whether you are a longtime fan of the song or are hearing it for the first time, Eddy’s version is sure to leave a lasting impression and become a treasured part of your musical collection.
